Exercises to Alleviate Hip and Hamstring Pain from Desk Work
Written with artificial intelligence.

A new series offers weekly exercises aimed at combating discomfort caused by prolonged sitting. This week focuses on stretching and strengthening the hips and hamstrings to mitigate associated pain.
Importance of Stretching for Desk Workers
Chronic desk work can lead to a variety of musculoskeletal issues, including persistent aches and injuries. Acknowledging this, a new six-part series has been launched to provide exercises that help improve flexibility and strength, particularly for those engaged in long hours of sitting. Each week introduces a new routine targeting different body areas to address these concerns.
Focus on Hips and Hamstrings
This week's exercises concentrate on the hips and hamstrings. Sitting for extended periods causes hip flexors and hamstrings to shorten and tighten, potentially leading to discomfort in the lower back and pelvis. As the hip flexors are linked to the lumbar spine, tightness in these muscles can contribute significantly to back pain.
Recommended Exercises
The following exercises, demonstrated by trainer Melissa Gunn from Pure Strength LA, are designed to alleviate tightness in the hips and hamstrings:
- Hip Stretch: Sit on a chair and place your left ankle on your right knee. Hinge forward at the hips, lowering your chest toward your leg. Feel the stretch in your left hip. Repeat on the other side for a total of 10 times.
- Hamstring Stretch: Place the heel of one foot on a couch or coffee table, keeping the leg straight and toes pointed up. Bend at the waist while maintaining a straight back and raised chest until you feel a stretch in your hamstrings. Perform this 5-10 times on each side.
